Chapter 15

Jill walked beside Scott along the wharf after a dinner that was surprisingly pleasant, even with their rather serious discussion. It was kind of a relief to just get that out in the open.

Scott stopped short by the taffy shop. “Seriously, I’m going to buy you a box a taffy. You know you want it.”

She did. A lot. “Okay, but only because you’re insisting.”

He grinned. “Then I’m insisting.” He held the door open for her.

They walked inside, and the aroma of cooked sugar, mint, and caramel swirled around her. Even though she’d eaten a good-sized meal, her mouth watered in anticipation.

“Vanilla, right? Your favorite. And mint. And cinnamon.”

He remembered her three favorites. “Yes, that’s right.”

He ordered a box and handed it to her as they walked out. “Go ahead. You know you want some.”

She opened the box and took out a piece of vanilla, unwrapping it and popping it into her mouth. The sweet vanilla assaulted her taste buds. So delicious.

He laughed. “Knew you’d choose vanilla first.”

“Want one?” She held out the box, and he took a mint one.

“There are some benches out by the marina. Want to sit there for a bit and people watch?”

That sounded like fun. Relaxing. They used to love to people watch and make up stories about the strangers who walked past them. “Sure, we could sit for a while.”

They found a bench and both took another piece of taffy. “This is so good. I hope I don’t eat the entire box in like a day.” She closed the lid, trying to ignore that it was calling for her to have just one more piece.

“There’s more where that came from. I could go buy another box.”

“You will not. This is more than enough.”

“It’s good… but not as good as the Estes Park taffy, is it?”

“Not quite,” she admitted. She should go back there the next time she went home to Sweet River.

And that thought surprised her. That she was considering visiting Sweet River Falls. And that she had thought of it as home.

“So, do you like still living in Sweet River?” she asked.

“I do. Have my own place now out on the Lone Elk Lake.”

“You do?” She couldn’t quite picture that. Those cabins didn’t come cheap, and he’d always been so laid back about saving money. As in, he never had any saved.

“Why do you look so surprised?”

“I don’t know. I just don’t picture you with a home to take care of. Doing yard work. Stuff like that.”

“I actually love puttering in the yard. I grow some veggies in pots during the summer. I don’t even mind all the snow shoveling. Well, usually. Last year we got dumped on week after week. I was ready for spring.”

She hadn’t picked up a snow shovel in years. Her condo complex always shoveled the sidewalks, and she had a parking space in the garage. And the snow in the city was dingy and gray, not white and pretty like the snowfalls in Sweet River.

“So Christie said you have a condo, not a house.
